Surreal News 11-19-10 features  Senior Scientist and Director of the Scientific Integrity Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), Dr. Francesca Grifo and Kate Hanni (FlyersRights.org)  a Tannen Weekly, Media Matters Minute and plenty of Surreal News Items.

FlyersRights.org was formed to support in 2006, when a Napa, California Realtor, Kate Hanni, was stranded with her husband and two children for 9 hours on the tarmac in Austin, Texas. The victim of a sexual assault just months before, Kate vowed never to be a victim again – and she fought back, vowing to organize other passengers to pass the long-stalled Airline Passengers’ Bill of Rights.

The bill, which had been stalled in Congress since at least 1999, allows passengers the option of getting off delayed planes after 3 hours on the ground, and requires airlines to provide adequate food, water, temperature controls, ventilation and working toilets to accommodate a 3-hour delay. .

Today, with more than 25,000 members, FlyersRights.org is the largest non-profit consumer organization in the United States representing airline passengers. Kate has given more than 800 interviews to the media, and hardly a day goes by that FlyersRights.org isn’t quoted by a major media outlet.

We’re closer to achieving our legislative goals than ever before: with the unanimous approval in July, 2009 by the Senate Commerce Committee of the bipartisan Boxer-Snowe Airline Passengers’ Bill of Rights as part of S. 1451, The FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act, the Senate is now poised to take up the strongest pro-airline consumer legislation in decades.

We urge you to join us in support of this important pro-consumer legislation. Sign our Petition, call and email your Representative and Senators, and urge them to SUPPORT the bipartisan Boxer-Snowe Airline Passengers’ Bill of Rights.

Gaps in our Food Safety System; Whistleblower Protection

Background: As the Senior Scientist and Director of the Scientific Integrity Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), Dr. Francesca Grifo mobilizes scientists and citizens to defend the integrity of government science from political interference, has testified before Congress and is widely quoted on the topic in media. Dr. Grifo came to UCS in 2005 from Columbia University where she directed the Center for Environmental Research and Conservation graduate policy workshop and ran the Science Teachers Environmental Education Program. Previously, she was director of the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation and a curator of the Hall of Biodiversity at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.  She edited and contributed to the books Biodiversity and Human Health and The Living Planet in Crisis: Biodiversity Science and Policy. She can discuss what’s at stake when politicians and industry withhold scientists’ findings from the public, gaps in US food safety system, survey that reveals some FDA and USDA scientists and inspectors experience political interference in their work when they question the safety of US food supply, whether or not proposed FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (S510) would protect public health, whistleblower protection for federal scientists.  Please see “2010 Food Safety Report” http://www.ucsusa.org/scientific_integrity/abuses_of_science/food-safety.html.

David E. Hoffman, 2010 Pulitzer-Prize winning author and Washington Post
journalist will be our next featured speaker Thursday, November 18 at 7:30
pm in the Sarasota Hyatt Regency.

The title of his talk is Global Zero: Nuclear Weapons from the Cold War to
Today. There are many thought- provoking questions for Hoffman to address on
this subject both looking back and going forward. How did mistrust,
suspicion and secrecy make the Cold War even more dangerous than we realized
at the time? Why and how did Reagan and Gorbachev turn the tide? What
actually happened at the Reykjavik Summit and what happened after? Why are
we still struggling with the nuclear weapons legacy of the Cold War?What
should we do about it? Is it feasible or desirable to have a nuclear free
world?

David E. Hoffman is a contributing editor at the Washington Post and Foreign
Policy Magazine. For The Post, he covered the White House during the
presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, and was subsequently
diplomatic correspondent and Jerusalem correspondent. From 1995 to 2001, he
served as Moscow bureau chief, and later as foreign editor and assistant
managing editor for foreign news.

Hoffman's book The Dead Hand won this year's Pulitzer Prize for General
Non-Fiction. It is the story of people - presidents, scientists, engineers,
diplomats, soldiers, spies, scholars, politicians and others -- who sought to
brake the speeding locomotive of the arms race.

Shane Harris:
At New College on Nov. 16 at 4 pm in Mildred Sainer Pavilion with a talk on “The Rise of the Surveillance State: U.S. Intelligence Since 9/11,” featuring Washingtonian magazine writer Shane Harris. Author of The Watchers: The Rise of America’s Surveillance State, Harris has written about intelligence and counterterrorism for more than a decade and will speak about how the U.S. government has attempted to catch terrorists since the 9/11 attacks and the implications for our security, privacy and, ultimately, our democracy.

Jonathan Alter (“Promise”) & Jane Pfeilsticker (Manatee School Board)  as our guests.

Description

Barack Obama’s inauguration as president on January 20, 2009, inspired the world. But the great promise of “Change We Can Believe In” was immediately tested by the threat of another Great Depression, a worsening war in Afghanistan, and an entrenched and deeply partisan system of business as usual in Washington. Despite all the coverage, the backstory of Obama’s historic first year in office has until now remained a mystery.

In The Promise: President Obama, Year One, Jonathan Alter, one of the country’s most respected journalists and historians, uses his unique access to the White House to produce the first inside look at Obama’s difficult debut.

Ms. Pfeilsticker is currently an Associate Professor of Biology at Manatee Community College and was elected to the Manatee County School Board in 2006. She has served on community and college wide committees to develop curriculum and policy changes to enhance student success. She has received three Outstanding Educator awards from the University of Florida. She is an advisor for MCC´s Earth Club, and has sponsored several student research programs and internship programs for MCC students and local high school students. She is running for re-election to Manatee School Board.
